Air Canada to start Calgary – Tokyo route

March 26, 2010, Calgary - Air Canada will begin flying directly between Calgary and Tokyo starting Saturday, March 27.

March 26, 2010  By The Canadian Press

Airline CEO Calin Rovinescu says it's the first route to connect the centre of Canada's oilpatch and Asia.

He told the Calgary Chamber of Commerce the company is trying to become a "global champion'' by taking risks.

He says the airline has chosen to expand its global reach rather than "hide in a bunker'' as the world begins to recover from a severe recession.

Rovinescu made his remarks in the hometown of his company's chief rival: WestJet Airlines, which is aggressively working to grow its market share.
